About us

Home Water Institute is a guide for UK households who want to understand the water they drink and make good decisions about filtering it.

What we write about

We cover the questions people ask about water at home: why tap water sometimes tastes of chlorine, what hard water and limescale do to your kettle and appliances, how to check an older house for lead pipes, and which type of water filter makes sense for your kitchen. We publish practical guides and comparisons of products that promise to help.

How our content is made

Our guides are based on published information from the Drinking Water Inspectorate, public health bodies and the water industry — sources are listed under every article. In our comparisons we assess products against the same criteria, which we describe on our How we test page.

Our articles do not replace advice from your water company or a qualified plumber. If you are worried about your water, contact your local water company — in most cases they will check it for you.
